Sleep and the Immune System: Can Lack of Sleep Make You Sick?

Short on sleep and catching every cold? Here's what the research says about how sleep and the immune system work together — and what actually helps.

Yes — not getting enough sleep can make you more likely to get sick, and the research on this is unusually clear. In one carefully controlled study, people who slept fewer than six hours a night were more than four times as likely to catch a cold after being deliberately exposed to a virus than people who slept seven hours or more. Sleep is one of the times your immune system does some of its most important work, so when nights get short or broken, your defenses genuinely take a hit. The good news: the relationship runs both ways, and even small, realistic improvements in sleep can help your body protect itself.

How does sleep actually affect the immune system?

Sleep isn’t downtime for your immune system — it’s a shift change. During sleep, especially deep sleep, your body ramps up the production and coordination of key immune cells and signaling molecules. A major 2019 review in Physiological Reviews described what the authors called the “sleep-immune crosstalk”: sleep strengthens immune defenses, and in turn, immune activity (like fighting an infection) reshapes your sleep, which is part of why you feel so wiped out and sleepy when you’re sick (Besedovsky, Lange & Haack, 2019, Physiological Reviews).

A few of the concrete things that happen during healthy sleep:

Your body releases more of certain cytokines — proteins that help coordinate the immune response and are especially important when you’re fighting inflammation or infection. Deep sleep also supports “immune memory,” the process by which your body learns to recognize a threat it has seen before. And levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can suppress parts of the immune system when chronically elevated, naturally dip during the early part of the night. What does the research show about sleep loss and getting sick?

The single most striking study is Prather and colleagues’ 2015 experiment, published in the journal Sleep. Researchers tracked 164 healthy adults’ sleep for a week using wrist trackers, then quarantined them and gave them nasal drops containing a live cold virus. People sleeping less than six hours a night were 4.2 times more likely to develop a cold than those sleeping more than seven hours — and short sleep predicted illness better than age, stress, income, or even smoking status (Prather et al., 2015, Sleep, 38(9)).

Vaccines tell a similar story. In a classic 2002 study, healthy young men whose sleep was restricted to four hours a night for several nights produced roughly half the antibody response to a flu shot compared with well-rested controls (Spiegel, Sheridan & Van Cauter, 2002, JAMA). A 2023 meta-analysis in Current Biology pooled experimental and real-world studies and confirmed the pattern: objectively short sleep around the time of vaccination was linked to a weaker antibody response in adults (Spiegel et al., 2023, Current Biology). In other words, sleep helps your body get the full benefit of the protection it’s offered.

It’s worth being calm and precise here: one short night won’t wreck your immune system. What the research points to is chronic short sleep and the days immediately around a specific challenge (a virus exposure, a vaccine) as the moments that matter most.

Why does this hit new parents especially hard?

If you have a newborn or toddler, this section probably needs no introduction. New parents live at the intersection of two things that stress the immune system: not enough total sleep and badly fragmented sleep. On top of that, young kids are basically germ delivery systems — daycare and playgroups mean a steady rotation of viruses coming through the door, right when your defenses are running low.

There’s a nuance worth knowing. In the Prather cold study, it was short total sleep — not fragmentation on its own — that most strongly predicted getting sick. That’s genuinely reassuring for parents, because it means the goal isn’t a perfect unbroken night (which may be impossible right now). The more useful target is protecting your total hours however you can: an earlier bedtime, a shared night-shift with a partner, or a daytime nap when the baby sleeps. How does this affect perimenopausal women?

Perimenopause brings its own version of the same problem. As estrogen and progesterone fluctuate and decline, sleep often becomes lighter, more broken, and harder to hold onto — with night sweats and hot flashes yanking women out of deep sleep exactly when the immune system would otherwise be doing its work. Early-morning waking and difficulty falling back asleep are common too.

Layered on top is the fact that immune function and inflammation shift with age and with the hormonal changes of midlife. That doesn’t mean anything is wrong with you — it means sleep becomes an even more valuable lever, not a less important one. Does more sleep boost your immune system?

Sort of — but the framing matters. You can’t “supercharge” your immune system by sleeping twelve hours, and banking extra sleep in advance doesn’t build up a reserve the way a savings account would. What the evidence supports is more modest and more reliable: getting adequate, consistent sleep lets your immune system function the way it’s designed to. The benefit comes from removing a deficit, not from adding a superpower.

What actually helps?

You don’t need to overhaul your life. A few realistic moves protect the sleep that protects you:

Protect your total hours first. If broken sleep is unavoidable right now, focus on the total you can bank across the night and any naps — an earlier bedtime often does more than any gadget.

Keep wake and sleep times roughly steady. Even on hard days, a stable rhythm helps your body anchor its restorative processes. Big swings are harder on your system than a consistent, slightly-imperfect schedule.

Be strategic around known challenges. If you have a vaccine appointment or you know a bug is going around the house, treat the nights just before and after as sleep-priority nights if you possibly can.

Don’t punish yourself for one rough night. A single short night is a blip, not a crisis. Chronic patterns are what the research flags — and those are the ones worth gently addressing.

Sleep and your immune system are on the same team: your body does a lot of its quiet protective work while you rest, so short or broken sleep really can leave you more open to catching whatever’s going around.
